There are many talented people who are behind-the-scenes making Cirque du Soleil’s shows the best that they can be. One of these people is British architect Mark Fisher, who has earned an international reputation for his amazing rock concert designs. Fisher is known for The Wall and Division Bell for Pink Floyd’s shows as well as Steel Wheels and Bridges to Babylon for the Rolling Stones, among many others. He’s worked for some of the most popular artists in the music business (Elton John, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, and Cher) and has also done projects for the Lisbon World’s Fair and the Millennium Dome in London. Fisher is a large-scale creator, and it’s no wonder he’s decided to join up with Cirque du Soleil’s spectacular, big-time productions.
When discussing the differences between designing for a rock show and designing for Cirque du Soleil, Fisher says, “In a rock show the scenery is much more of a background. Here, it’s actually part of the landscape in which the performers live and move to create their show.” Fisher is currently working on the set design for the new Cirque show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He designed the stage set and the auditorium as an integrated concept rather than two separate units. Of the design Fisher says, “The narrative starts at the transition between the casino and the theatre and then opens out as the audience come into the theatre, and then opens out more when they get the show.” Fisher’s main goal is to design the Cirque’s sets in order to reinforce the relationship between the audience and the performers and it seems that he’s done just that with his latest Cirque set.
