Lower Manhattan had a fine opportunity to turn one of its declining ports into a bustling, thriving, stretching, jumping, writing, dancing, prancing center of commerce and French-Canadians. However, the deal to build a $625 million entertainment complex at Pier 40 has been declined by the management operating the pier. Apparently Cirque and its investors wanted to get a lease of somewhere around 50 years, but the pier was only able to guarantee a 30 year lease. Why? Who really knows. But perhaps the Canadians were using the metric system, and the deal will go through without a hitch once they get it fixed in translation.
You can see two different stories on this subject. The first is a small blurb from the Buffalo News. It’s all business there. Or, better yet, you can get the word from a blog. We love blogs here at the Cirque Blog. It’s called Curbed, and they make the news of this Cirque port deal rejection sound oh, so much more scandalous and dramatic.
