There’s a new circus in town. Well, a new circus in Australia, at least. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting on a new kind of circus that’s more urban than glitzy, more dance competition than clown car. The Tom Tom Club is a band of street performers who have made their own brand of circus with acrobatic stunts, improvisational urban music and a flavor that comes straight from the streets.
A few things bout the article: While it’s great that these guys are putting together a new genre, one which they call Extreme Circus, there’s no reason to take shots at the Cirque kind, or the Barnum and Bailey kind. These types of circuses certainly have their fans, and their place in the art as a whole. We can all fit under the same, humongous tent without tearing one another down.
Also, the Tom Tom Club seems to have made a real impression in Austrailia, but will it go over well in America? Something to look out for in the next few years. With the elasticity of Cirque, it’s a wonder that they haven’t made a show or two in Vegas that has an inner city theme. Maybe these guys would like to create their own Cirque show?
