Cirque-Esque Shakespeare

If you were just strolling across the headlines in Columbus, Ohio, you might have come across the word “cirque” and been instantly drawn to it. You might have even wanted to blog about it. Well, it appears that there is a production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream that’s coming to Columbus, and many people have called it Cirque-esque. (I like that, Cirque-esque. Nice. Gets some use out of those ques.)

Anyways, the production company went to great lengths to make the tale, one of Billy Bard’s most lively and popular, a danceable, music-filled experience. And what better play to make in a Cirque fashion than Misdummer? There are fairies and nymphs, and a man turns into a donkey. And there’s comedy. Perfect. Why didn’t Shakespeare come up with this stuff?

The better question is, what other famous plays should be made more Cirque. Here are a list of the ones that the Cirque Blog would like to see “Cirqued out.”

  • West Side Story
  • 12 Angry Men
  • Phantom of the Opera
  • Rent
  • A Streetcar Named Desire
  • Les Misearbles
  • Cabaret
  • Chicago
