Cirque coming to Maryland!

A little blurb on a Maryland-based NBC affiliate says Cirque Du Soleil is planning to open a show at the National Harbor waterfront, already the site of “The Awakening,” a sculpture of a giant coming out of the ground, and future site of the National Children’s Museum. It looks like details are still being worked out–naturally, because planning for a 300-acre circus is no small feat.

It’s so appropriate that Cirque would host a show near a sculpture like “The Awakening.” For those who are unfamiliar with it, a photo can be found here. There’s more information about it, plus another picture, here. It’s a sculpture of a giant rising out of the earth. It’s a little frightening, actually–I’m not sure how well-placed a children’s museum is near this roaring colossus. But it seems perfectly suited to the grand, often surreal shows of Cirque Du Soleil, whose characters often seem larger than life themselves. Looming, gargantuan, and eye-popping–yep, that’s Cirque’s shows, alright.

Check Stubhub.com for tickets to those shows. You can even find tickets to other kind of performances.
