“Corteo” tends to draw a lot of interest from reviewers, probably because of the sombre tone and themes of the show, which, if you’re not familiar with it, revolve around an old clown who, on his deathbed, is reliving the joys and tragedies of his life.
The narrative is what seems to grip them the most. In a recent review by a Vancouver publication, the opening scene was enthralling. And why shouldn’t it be? There aren’t a lot of musical and acrobatic performances that go to the length of develop a compelling story, much less one that touches on the fragility and beauty of mortality. And Cirque Du Soleil, better known for its colorful, surreal performances and bright Las Vegas showmanship probably isn’t the kind of circus troupe you’d expect to approach that kind of material.
