Manu Bonmariage is making a documentary about Franco Dragone, the creator and director behind a dozen or so Cirque du Soleil productions, including Saltimbanco, Mystere, Alegria, Quidam, O and La Nouba. The show makes its debut Tuesday at the Montreal World Film Festival and shows another side of the creative envisionary, who now works in La Louviere, Blegium. For two months the director followed Dragone from Las Vegas to his current home and Macao, showcasing the inner workings of the creaive genius as he does his best to gloss over his world. Dragone is currently working on Othello in the steel and mining town he lives in, hoping to bring theatrics and ‘life’ back into the area. “He is such a unique individual,” the director says, , in Montreal for the doc’s festival debut. “He is a man of the people who never changed in spite of becoming one of the biggest figures on the world stage. He had dreams and he followed through on them. Yet he never turned his back on his community. His concern for his fellow man far outweighs his desire for fame and fortune. There is no question that he is tough on his actors and collaborators, but he has a vision of what he wants to create and he won’t compromise on that level,” Bonmariage notes. “But that doesn’t mean he’s a tyrant. He’s simply a passionate man. I told him my goal was not to make a movie about a saint, but rather just to make a movie about a man. Which is precisely what he wanted, too.” Looking for Dragone screens Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., Thursday at 11 a.m. and Friday at 2:40 p.m. at the Quartier Latin, 350 Émery St.
For all of Cirque du Soleil’s magic, they still hold a tireseome stronghold on some of today’s on today’s greatest and most theatrical events. When Kooza opened up in Denver’s Pepsi Center this week, complete with its full blue and yellow top, audiences’ remained in awe at their presicision, expertise and attention to detail that have revealed themselves over the course of set-up to production take off. The story has been around since 2007 when it first premiered to audiences as a ‘throwback’ to the Cirque du sOleil from the ‘good ol’ days’ as the story emphasizes traditional circus acts via jugglers, unicyclists and trapeze acts.
Though every Cirque show starts with a story, they are often too difficult to follow and while narrative somehow becomes invovled with the main characters in whatever whichway, they don’t develop enough for even an education and well-versed Cirque fan to understand. Instead, Cirque du Soleil tickets are sold thanks to the power of stunts - attracting audiences from all over the world as athletes jump through hoops (sometimes literally) portraying an overall theme. The show will run at the Pepsi Center grounds in Denver through September 27th, with showtimes Tuesdays-Thursdays, 4 and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 1 and 5 p.m. Sundays. See for yourself what all the action has been about.
Denver Cooking Examiner Rachel Ruff recently met up with Cirque du Soleil’s chef on scene Chris Pierce, who travels around the nation with the crew and performers, keeping them healthy and well nourished. “[tThe calories] vary for each performer, but they do eat a lot.” Tables are lined with salad stations, fresh fish and lean cuts of organic meat. Piece noted that the staff and crew go through about 15 pounds of fish a day, and 20 pounds of red meat. They even eat dessert. “Yes, they can. They mostly crave heart healthy dark chocolates.”
Pierce previously worked with Boulder’s Q’s restaurant and and is familiar with the local produce and shops, already scouting out the farmer’s markets and organic farms while Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza sets up shop in the area, running through September 27th. The next stop, Santa Monica, has already Pierce thinking about the local organic greens, fresh fish and meat that he can find for the company - preparing a staff member to check out the local arena beforehand. While there isn’t a real secret to all the limber positions made on stage, it might just help that Pierce is giving them tons of healthy and organic food. See for yourself how well they move as the show remains at the Pepsi Center for another month with Cirque du Soleil tickets today!

Alegria is showing off its colors to the audience members at The Arena in Bridgeport and they couldn’t be happier. Directed by Fraco Dragone and choreographed by Debra Brown, the show’s “jubilating” spirit first embarked on a worldwide tour in 1994 when it attempted to diversify and demand a clean spirit. The athletes, dancers, acrobats and contortionists who make up the cast of Cirque du Soleil’s show move around the stage seemlessly as if they were showing the world under water. Not only do the acrobats move wonderfully, but they also act to great music - the score by Rene Dupere was nominated for a Grammy and sets the musicians back as The White Singer and The Black Singer, each other’s alter ego’s, accompany the movements on stage. The show is working its way through the country, as it has has done for many years, and will continue at Bridgeport at The Arena at Habor Yard through August 23rd. Politics has always been ugly, but now assemblyman Paul Krekorian (D-Bubank) is bringing something beautiful into the fight - Cirque du Soleil. According to the Los Angeles Times, the state lawmaker is looking to replace current LA Councilwoman Wendy Greuel in the San Fernando Valley and is using her decided to lend $30 million to a venture that would bring Cirque du Soleil to Hollwyood against her. The opposition has been posting fliers with a juxtapose of images: a perturbed looking firefighter with a 5 o’clock shadow and a juggler in suspenders riding a unicyle with the words: “which is the better use of our tax dollars?” Earlier this month, as previously reported, the council members of LA county voted to accepted the terms of a decade long performance schedule at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater, noting that the money would come from the federal government not the public safety funds. ”Either Mr. Krekorian doesn’t understand that these federal loan dollars cannot legally be used to hire firefighters or he is intentionally deceiving voters to earn political points,” Chris Essel, a former airport Commissioner and another candidate in the election said in a written statement issued by her campaign. For fans lucky enough to see the new Criss Angel, enjoy the mystery of the change, as the star of Cirque du Soleil’s Criss Angel “Believe” has apparently earned himself a heart. The former boyfriend of Playboy Bunny Holly Madison and star of the newest Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas has returned from a vacation with a full heart intact, it seems, as the star of the show who was once ridiculed for his guard has become much more accessible. The star is probably out in the public eye much more now that his fifth season of “Mindfreak” on A&E is on. The five hour long episodes required a season of promotion. Another step in the road to revival was that Steve Flynn, his longtime PR Man, parted ways and finally that Criss Angel made a deal with MGM Mirage to include a second Mindfreak store at Circus - Cirus and branding Luxor’s center bar Liquidity with his name in front of it.
Because of all these recent events Criss Angel is much more out and about, though ‘Believe’ still hasn’t been getting the kind of reviews other Cirque du Soleil shows have earned. “I have the best fans in the world,” he said in Las Vegas.
