For inside information about Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria show, the best person to ask may be the show’s senior artistic director, Michael Smith. He recently sat down to explain the show and said that everyone should go with an open mind. He explained, “Every single person’s experience of ‘Alegria’ should be different. I hate the idea that people think something esoteric is going on, and if they don’t get it, they’ve missed something of the show. It’s not it. It’s not it at all. It’s about creating a world that invites people in and they take what they want.”
He went on to say, “What I think is amazing about the touring shows is, it’s not all about technology, it’s about a live performance… People should just come and be entertained. At the end of the day, it’s circus. And the thrill of seeing people do things that their bodies should not do is really thrilling. However we dress it up, that’s what people should come to see and absolutely enjoy it.”
Alegria has many of the signature elements of the famed Cirque du Soleil organization. Fans at the show are treated to everything from a contortionist to a fire-knife dancer, aerial high bar performers and a synchronized trapeze act.
