Cirque’s Foray into Theater

Cirque du Soleil has long been criticized for one thing over the years - while it’s array of stories and shows have been endless - it has never tackled the big Broadway stage. Until now. Though the critics have been tireless in their critiques, with the Montreal based company’s new attempt at “Banana Shpeel” they might finally be held to silence. The new troupe is debuting it’s material at the Chicago Theatre before moving to the Big Apple’s Beacon Theatre in February. The show is their first foray into musical theater as it tackles vaudeville, clowning and musical comedy. “We had a lot of good stuff from the start,” Serge Roy, the Cirque du Soleil producer for “Banana Shpeel” said to Leisure Blogs. “The problems came when we started to put everything together. We were getting into a world in which we were not at ease.” Now it seems like the unperturbed acts behind the scenes are ready. Though the story doesn’t officially debut until December 2nd, it has already gotten headlines when two of its main stars and biggest draws - two Broadway stars - were cut: Annaleigh Ashford and Michael Longoria. “We make changes like that all the time during our creation process,” Roy continues. “The only difference is that, usually, nobody hears about them.” Yet with their new theater move, each new step they take will get loads of attention.
